What makes the Frankie Montas trade good for the Yankees

It was no secret that going into the 2022 MLB trade deadline and with Luis Severino going down with an injury and won't be back to mid-September, that the Yankees needed starting pitching. So, when the Yankees made the trade for Oakland A's starter Frankie Montas it was a very good trade for the Yankees. With the addition of Montas he will slide right into the number 2 spot in the Yankees rotation. With a rotation of Gerrit Cole, Nestor Cortes jr, Jameson Taillon and Domingo German, Frankie Montas gives them a boost and even when Severino returns from injury, from now and the beginning of the postseason Montas will be the Yankees number 2 starter, given them a 1-2 punch of Cole and Montas, making this duo one of the best 1-2 punches in baseball.

Frankie Montas

Since the start of 2015 Montas has a win loss record of 35-32, a career era of 3.73. k/9 of 9.4, a 1.27 whip and a .247 opp average. At only 29 years old Montas has been a solid pitcher. His best year was 2021 where he went 13-9 with a 3.37 era with 207 strikeouts and finished 6th in the CY award. This year he is 4-9 with a 3.18 era and has battled injuries, but if you throw away his record this year, he has been a very good pitcher because in each of Montas's starts he has given the A's 6 and 7 innings. What each of Montas starts tells me is he is someone who when he gets the ball, he will go the distance and that is what you need from your starting pitcher. If the Yankees have to face the Astros in the ALCS having Montas is going to help them because in 15 starts against the Astros Montas has a record of 8-5 with a 3.40 era and 68 strikeouts. So, if they do end up facing the Astros in the ALCS and are up 1-0 or down 0-1 having Montas will help them go up 2-0 or have a chance at evening up the ALCS. This is a trade that gives the Yankees the pitching upgrade that they have needed and what also makes this good for the Yankees is they not only have Montas for this year, but they also have Montas for the following year. In the two years that the Yankees have Montas if they win a championship in 2022 or 2023 the trade would be worth it because the main reason Montas was acquired was to win a championship, plus  if the prospects the Yankees gave up become good it won't matter because if Montas is going strong and helps them win it was worth it because Montas is doing what he is supposed to do and that's help them win games and win a championship. Having Frankie Montas not only shows the players that the organization wants to win but it also lets the fan base know that they are putting the team in the best position to not only continue to win regular season games but go deep in October and achieve the ultimate goal in winning a championship.
